Model Energy Code Standard Design

When using BGW and evaluating the performance of a design it is often desirable to define a base standard to ensure your design meets a recognized minimum level of performance. BGW provides a method to compare a given design to the Model Energy Code (MEC) requirements, to meet the minimum conservation performance levels established for your location. This evaluation creates what the Model Energy Code refers to as a “Standard Design”.

To develop a Model Energy Code Standard Design the program uses envelope surface area data from the design and applies that to the minimum insulation requirements for each component. The insulation requirements are based on the heating degree days for your location.

BGW2004 generates an annual estimate of a residential building’s heating and cooling energy needs, given in terms of energy performance, so you can see how much money you’ll save with each variation in design.
